Effective K-12 Tutoring / Mentoring

Becoming an Effective K-12 Tutor / Mentor
Enroll for 1 Credit (Pass/Fail) OR 
Take as Professional Development (1.5 PGU)

This pass/fail course will be organized around three half-day, weekend sessions. NCSU Students seeking credit must 1) complete required readings / modules, 2) attend and actively participate in all sessions, and 3) must prepare and present a poster for the Final Session that meets expectations on how they have incorporated / plan to incorporate strategies into their tutoring / mentoring (template and rubric will be provided).

Topical Outline Fall 2013:  (Three Weekend Sessions, Poe 120)

Session 1 (Offered September 14, 9-3pm): Making a Commitment (tutor v. mentor), Building and Maintaining a Relationship, Establishing Routines, Questioning Practices, Monitoring Progress & Coping with Frustration, Supporting Student Motivation

Session 2 (Offered October 26, 9am-3pm):  Participants will choose to attend two small-group sessions covering content-specific tutoring strategies (reading, math, social studies, science).  The class will convene as a large group to discuss: Supporting Homework Engagement and Responding to ‘Crisis’.

Session 3 (Final Presentation Poster Session, Nov. 16, 9am*-3pm): Participants must create a poster presentation that outlines how they implemented / will implement strategies from the course into their tutoring / mentoring experiences.  There will be two keynote speeches: “Becoming a Self-Directed Tutor / Mentor” and “Saying Goodbye.


* * Note: We will formally break for lunch.  Students can bring their own lunch or can bring money on the day of the session to place an order for a delivered lunch.
